Proposed Street Name Change for Drakes Creek Road and Callender Lane
July 26, 2007

Dear Drakes Creek Road and Callender Lane Residents:

The reason that you have received this letter is to give you an opportunity for you to provide input on the potential renaming of Callender Lane and a portion of Drakes Creek Road.  Such action has become necessary because:

1. Indian Lake Boulevard has been extended to Vietnam Veterans Boulevard
2. Callender Lane has been closed
3. Durham Farm is being developed
4. A section of Drakes Creek Road will be closed in conjunction with the
development of Durham Farm - the section from Jones Road to just north of
the two houses on Durham Farm

This results in a conflict in street names. The conflict relates to the fact that one road will bear four names: Indian Lake Boulevard, Callender Lane (from Vietnam Veterans to Stop 30), Drakes Creek Road (from Stop 30 to Jones Road) and Durham Boulevard (from Jones Road to Long Hollow Pike).  In other words, a person could be traveling from the Indian Lake Peninsula on Indian Lake and drive all the way to Long Hollow Pike without ever turning; yet the name of the street would change four times - from Indian Lake to Callender to Drakes Creek and to Durham.

A map is enclosed which shows the location and names of these four street segments.

One street with four names will cause confusion, resulting in drivers becoming lost and making it difficult for emergency service personnel to locate the proper address on a timely basis.  As we all know, a few minutes makes a big difference when dealing with a fire, police or medical emergency.  It could be the difference between life or death.

For this reason, it is prudent to explore a solution to this problem. Consolidating these four names into one name should be considered.  This has been discussed with County officials.  They concur that a solution should be pursued.  The Hendersonville General
Committee ( 3 Aldermen) has discussed this matter and has directed that a letter be mailed to all property owners along Callender Lane and Drakes Creek Road to explain
the situation and to solicit input on extending the Indian Lake Boulevard name all the way to Long Hollow Pike.

This would involve a change of address for the two addresses on Callender Lane between Vietnam Veterans and Stop 30 and for the 21 addresses on Drakes Creek Road from Stop 30 Road to Jones Road.  Drakes Creek Road from New Shackle Island Road to the 90-degree curve would remain the same. The three addresses on Drakes Creek Road from the 90-degree curve to Jones Road would need to change to some other street name. A map is enclosed which shows the proposed street names.

If your address does change, the City would notify the post office and E-911 of the change.  You would need to mail a change of address form to your utility companies, credit card companies, mortgage company, insurance companies, bank, etc.

Please let us know what your position is on this potential re-naming of your street.  You may mail a letter to Hendersonville Planning Department, 101 Maple Drive North, Hendersonville, TN, 37075 or you may send an e-mail to frogers@hvilletn.org.  Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Sincerely,

Fred D. Rogers, Jr.
Planning Director
